Finding the right longtail keywords is the best way to go if we aim to get some good amount of Google organic traffic to our website. And to do this, we need a good keyword suggestion tool to help us out.
So, we have a great topic to write about and we want to be sure that our article will rank well. Here is an approach, I use on a daily basis in my customers’ projects and my blogs. It will show how I organize my workflow, so my cornerstone article will be well prepared for both – the readers and Google search.
The software we will mainly use is called Rank Tracker from SEO Power Suite Software. We can download it for free here. The software is a fully featured rank tracking program. We will use it to find the best suitable longtail keywords to help any article rank better in Google. The only drawback on the free version is that we cannot save our project when closing the program, so we would need to rebuild it each time. Here you can check the paid version and also the features in the free and paid versions compared.
A similar job could be done with the free Google Keyword Planner if you know how to find your way around.
1. Use Google Autocomplete as long tail keyword suggestion tool
Let’s open Google search and start writing the keyword that would help to solve the problem we want to write about. For example, we want to write an article about how to find the best long tail keywords to rank for. We will start by writing a keyword related to our subject in Google search field and pay attention what proposals Google gives us to finalize the keyword. The best is to stop on something around 3-4 keywords long as a top suggestion from Google Autocomplete.
2. Use Rank Tracker keyword suggestion tool for further investigation
Next step we do is copying this long keyword and open Rank Tracker. Now we will use its Keyword suggestion tool to dig deeper.
We go to Keyword Research menu link >> Suggest Keywords and paste the keyword there. We can run the suggestion process several times each time choosing a different method. The available methods are Google Autocomplete, Google Adwords Keyword Planner, Google Related Searches, Bing and Yahoo (if those search engines are also relevant for your country). We should not forget to check our project preferences to be sure that we are pulling results for the desired country and language. About this setup, there is a wonderful article here and a video here.
It is important first to run the suggestion tool many times and keep looking for keyword suggestions to create a bigger ground base to look at. What is a good result for a long tail keyword? We can define a good result when:
- a long tail keyword is closely related to our target topic
- it doesn’t contain too many words
- it has a good amount of monthly searches
- high KEI.
Sometimes, this can turn out to be a time-consuming process. The software should be used carefully, so it doesn’t get blocked by search engines while trying to dig search volume data. At the end of the day, when a successful research is done well, it is really worth the effort.
3. How to look for the right long tail keyword
After finding some good amount of keywords suggestions, we should check how competitive they are.
If we are aiming for Google organic searches, then we should pay attention to the factor called KEI. Our focus turns towards the following combinations:
- higher search volumes
- low competition
- high KEI (colored green)
- long tail keywords.
Here is how the results in Rank Tracker might look like:
4. Writing the article by implementing the chosen long tail keyword
After carefully investigating the list, generated by the keyword suggestion tool, we finally have chosen our long tail keyword. Now, it is time to implement it in our article content. Here, the attention is to deliver good readability for the online visitor and excellent content optimisation for Google search. We can follow these instructions:
- put the chosen long tail keyword exactly as is in the article title
- use it in the article URL (pretty links, URL slug)
- implement it exactly as is, across your article content but not too often
- use variations of the keyword as synonyms by semantic meaning
- write variations of the keyword as a closely written modification
- implement 1 image in your article and put the keyword in the image ‘alt’
- implement some outgoing links related to the topic from prominent websites (and do not forget to mark them as “nofollow”)
- some more…

Finding long tails keywords with Rank Tracker as keyword suggestion tool
Long tail keywords deserve their attention when aiming to drive organic traffic from Google, Bing and Yahoo searches. There are other keyword suggestion tools out there that are very good to use, despite the ones mentioned here. Rank Tracker is one of the most comprehensive keyword tools to use. And not to forget, it is available for free. Another excellent tool is keywordtool.io but it is fully blown only in its paid version. Though, there is a big benefit if you decide to use them both.
